IF YOU WANT TO LIVE TO 100

Living to 100 is no longer a far fetched idea, it’s a real possibility.

  • Walk a lot - best exercise ever!
  • Eat your veggies - like mama said - and fruits, too!
  • Avoid boredom. Do what it takes to ward it off.
  • Keep moving. Yoga (if you’re into it), stretching and bending, working with light weights, etc.
  • Keep up with what’s going on in the world. Your brain needs the exercise and you really don’t need to be regarded as a relic.
  • Enjoy a glass of wine or other alcoholic drink every day.
  • Dark chocolate is a marvelous panacea for growing older.
  • Most people need people. So if you do, cultivate and keep your friends. You may outlive them but their friendship will have been priceless.
  • Conversely, if you’ve been a loner all your life, take solace in things you’ve always loved, books, great music, your animals, nature, etc.
  • Some in the younger generations will find you interesting and love to talk to you.  Enjoy it!
  • Don’t complain constantly about your ailments.  Try to keep a sense of humor about the whole thing. It’s only age.
  • Learn something new. Try studying Mandarin Chinese or something simpler like chess. Good for the brain.
  • Digging in the garden is good for your psyche and also your agility. Puts you in touch with the earth - all that good dirt!
  • Companionship - in all its aspects - being with another contributes to a long and happy life.
  • If you are working and have no intention of retiring - don’t!  Older workers are good workers. Gives one a sense of being needed and productive, and you’re doing something  you enjoy.
  • Hang onto that sense of optimism.  You’ll make it!

There's No Time Like the Present -- But I Do Miss These

Don’t dwell in the past thinking things were better back then.  Actually in many respects they weren’t.  But you still miss things that you loved that aren’t there anymore. I’ve thought of some:

1949 Studebaker Convertible.  Mine was blue.  I owned it in 1952.

Air travel was enjoyable.  It was an event.

Lightening bugs, also known as fire flies were abundant and added delight to summer evenings.

Holiday Magazine.  The 1st issue was in March, 1946.  Great photography and wonderful stories.

My family's 1820's home in Ohio.  Torn down to make way for a shopping center.

Generations of my dogs.

Youth Hostels in Europe, for 35 cents per night.  Really!

Card games at the supper table.  Gin Rummy and Michigan were popular.

Works For Me -- Maybe You, Too!!

The years have passed and a lot of makeup has come and gone, but these are the ones I really like.  A few are very inexpensive and some not so, but in no special order here they are.

Pond’s Cold Cream- perennial since I was 17 years old!

NARS Illuminator

Cle de Peau Beaute- concealer.  Pricey but worth it!  Tube lasts a long time and dark spots disappear!

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 15

NARS - tinted moisturizer or Chanel Vitalumiere Foundation

Shiseido- eye shadow

Lancome- eyebrow pencil, eyeliner and Hypnose Star mascara

Cover Girl- lipstick

Wear What Pleases You

You may have spent your life up to this point dressing to please other people, but when you’re over 70 you can wear anything you like,  but try to be adventurous.  At most you will be accused of being eccentric, and that’s not bad.

Sleeveless tops don’t work for me but if you have upper arms like Michelle Obama, go for it!

If you’ve always wanted a tattoo and know what you want, now is the time.  Ten years ago I had a celtic tattoo done on my wrist.  It’s been a great conversation piece ever since.  I’ve never regretted it.

I’ve always found high heels awkward for walking and besides, they hurt.  Be comfortable, whatever you wear.

Wrap your hair in a turban style with a gauzy scarf.  Works for bad hair days and it actually looks great!

Four Ideas to Consider

The following are just random comments/ the next posting I promise to pick a topic. If you have some ideas to pass along, this is the place.

*  Heavy red lipstick is very unflattering.   And dark lip liner is pretty weird.

*  Little half “granny “ glasses.  Don’t do it.  If you have cataracts, have the surgery.  Medicare covers most of the cost.

* Platinum hair - unreal.  Try going natural.  More you and less every one else.  If grey, focus on style.

*  Botox- if you need it.  But within reason.
