HAIR ' TIZ

Hair- what the heck to do with it!  Sometimes it’s easier to just pull it back and what about all that “gray”?  Some reminiscences about our  “crowning glory”  and as we get older the challenges thereof.

I’ve had bangs all my life.  My father would cut them too short!

When I was in high school I bleached my bangs with peroxide.  The nuns were horrified.

I had curly hair when I was little. For 70 years it has been straight and now the gray hair is coming in curly!

Gray hair is fine but if you’re going to keep it make sure you have a great haircut to go with it.

Forget the frizzy perms.

Unless your hair is  very oily don’t wash it every day.  Besides it styles better when it’s a little dirty.

With gray hair how about some silver highlights?

Don’t worry about Botox for your forehead- cut bangs!

Hair is very forgiving.  I’ve had fun with mine over the years-blonde, brunette, redhead and it’s all still there!

4 BOOKS 4 MORE INFO

Self help books for fashion and beauty are fun to read.  A lot of this stuff you probably already know, but there’re always a couple of tips that make you think, “I could do that!”

HARPERS BAZAAR FABULOUS AT EVERY AGE
BY Nandini D’Souza
Edited by Jenny Barnett
Hearst Books
$19.95
Some of these ensembles make me wish I were starting all over again, clothes-wise! I would buy things from each age group except the 20s.

HOW NOT TO LOOK OLD
by Charla Krupp
Hachette Press
$15.99
After reading this book, I was sad to learn Charla Krupp had died just recently from breast cancer at age 58. She was a very savvy lady and her book was entertaining to read.  My favorite chapter was “The Top 25 Clothes That Just Gotta Go.”

STAGING YOUR COMEBACK- A COMPLETE BEAUTY REVIVAL FOR
WOMEN OVER 45
BY Christopher Hopkins-the Makeover Guy
Health Communications, Inc.
$22.95
It’s astonishing what a good hair style, up to date makeup, and the right clothes can do for these women in his “before and after” photos. Being less obvious is the key.

HOW TO LOOK EXPENSIVE
by Andrea Pomerantz Lustig
Gotham Books
$25.00
This is about what you look like and what you can afford to look like.  Expensive makeup worth it?  How to apply fake eyelashes  and “bling” does not make you look expensive. Lots of tips to make you look chic without depleting your checkbook!

RED WINE, DARK CHOCOLATE, ETC.

When I was growing up in the 1950s I didn’t know these goodies existed.  My father was a beer drinker,  the chocolate was milk chocolate bunnies at Easter and yoghurt was somewhere in the future.  My first husband was Greek.

RED WINE, a delight to drink and health benefits, too!  Research is on going but resveratrol seems to be the key ingredient that  helps prevent damage to blood vessels, and reduces bad cholesterol.  Resveratrol  comes from the skin of grapes used to make wine. Because red wine is fermented with grape skins longer than white wine, red wines contain more resveratrol,  The word is “keep it  down to one drink a day”  and all will be well.      Photo credit: YannGarPhoto / Foter / CC BY-SA

DARK CHOCOLATE,  truly a gift from the gods!  It’s chocolate without milk solids added. The cocoa content of dark chocolate can range from 30% to above 80%.  At least 70% is considered the most health beneficial. Some of the benefits are: it helps to control blood sugar and it’s full of anti-oxidants.  All my life I’ve loved Mounds Bars.  Now I know why!            Photo credit: el patojo / Foter / CC BY-NC-SA

GREEK YOGHURT, wish this had come on the U.S. market years ago!  With the same amount of calories as regular yoghurt, it can pack up to double the protein while cutting the sugar content in half. Think Mediterranean Diet, think Greek yoghurt. Breakfast for me is Greek yoghurt first and then my black coffee. Best ever!       Photo credit: Mr. T in DC / Foter / CC BY-ND

JACKETS AND JEANS

A great jacket and a pair of skinny jeans is like a uniform for me. Dresses don’t do it any more.  In winter, a black turtleneck goes under the jacket and UGGs are the boots.  In summer,  a black tank top works and the shoes are FitFlops.  Doesn’t require much thought to getting dressed.  I do collect jackets, though. I find them on sale (never pay full price for jackets.)  Some real goodies can be found at Rescue Mission, Salvation Army, and other second-hand outlets too.  Here are a few of my favorites.

The label is CARLISLE.  A Rescue Mission rescue. Bought for $8.00

BCBG MAXAZRIA  label.  Lord & Taylor.  I’m drawn to this label!

Label by KASPER.  From Rescue Mission.  Senior Citizen day!  I paid
around $5.00.

BCBG MAXAZRIA .  Lord & Taylor.  Glad this was on sale. Suede.

BCBG MAXAZRIA. Lord & Taylor.  A real classic!

BCBG MAXAZRIA (again) Summer or winter- colorful and versatile

JONES NEW YORK label.  Gold braid trim and all. Works for me.
